This paper focuses on identifying the status of solar energy implementation in the Dominican Republic (DR) and in the wider global context in order to contrast the success the DR has made in this area. The data for this article is secondary in nature and is based on current scientific literature regarding solar energy. An in-depth literature review of research in the field has been conducted on the DR and global energy sectors and the nation's successful implementation of solar energy initiatives. Most information on solar energy in the Dominican was obtained from local newspaper articles, online energy magazines, local and international entities reports and local governmental webpages. Solar energy has become increasingly popular due to its environmental advantages and international commitment to climate change mitigation and compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG7). Globally, solar technology prices decreased drastically between 2010 and 2020, becoming the cheapest source of electricity generation worldwide, and the installed solar energy capacity has reached more than 1 TW. The Dominican Republic's energy sector presents a historical crisis due to an unreliable electrical grid system based on over 80% of fossil fuels power plants. The Dominican Government enacted law 57-07 (2007) to support renewable energy development; however, only six projects have been successfully executed. Despite this, solar energy implementation has increased in the country from 2018 to the point that the country is considered a beacon in solar deployment in the Caribbean. Still, the levels of implementation are below the projections, and the country will be unable to reach the penetration level set in the national energy strategy for 2025.en
