Description
Hand/Shutter/#2 is a hybrid video/film performance that was premiered at BFI Southbank on 11th March 2016 as part of an evening of performances celebrating the 50th anniversary of the London Filmmakers Co-operative. The show, title Interrupting Light was curated by Annabel Nicolson. Other artists included in the show were Gill Eatherley, Marilyn Halford, Tony Hill and Steve Farrer.
Hand/Shutter/#2 takes a 16mm film (Hand/Shutter) that I made in 1976 as its starting point. It is a film that addresses reflexive viewing and in its original form belongs with the Short Film Series (1975-ongoing). The film plays on the frustration of vision, using my hand to alternately block the camera lens and my eyes (seen in a mirror). The new version updates the work to include live performance and video projection. In this version the original film is shown superimposed on a live video feed of myself projecting (i.e. performing) both works. Here, the blocking of the film projector light alternates with blocking of the video projector light (live feed).
I am happy to be able to include Hand/Shutter/#2 in the small group of performance films that I began in the 1970s (e.g. Man with Mirror) and am still asked to perform years later, partly in light of renewed interest in the 1970s as a fertile period of ‘Expanded Cinema’ but also by virtue of the now considerable age difference between my on-screen self and myself as performer.
