Abstract
The physical and psychological benefits of yoga are well known. Individual well-being and quality of life are better in people who practise yoga. Yoga has anti-ageing properties and promotes healthy ageing. Amongst its many functions for older adults, the notable ones are that it improves balance, physical fitness, cognitive functions, and decreases frailty. Yoga helps manage various physical and mental illnesses as an ancillary intervention. Although the evidence base of its effectiveness is growing, yoga appears to be comparatively underutilised, specifically as a therapeutic method. Old age-appropriate yoga methods are available, and one can start in gentle steps, at an individual pace. It needs to be practised and preferably integrated into the daily routine. Appropriate guidance and support from yoga professionals are helpful. There is a need for further studies about the effectiveness of yoga in various contexts, from the promotion of health to the prevention of illnesses and as an intervention.
