The output, which is closely tied in with the research, was a gallery exhibition comprising seven related 16mm film installations adapted or designed with regard to the specific spaces of the gallery. The exhibition ran from 12 to 27 February 2016. The possibilities of, and problems attached to, projecting film in a gallery-type space is something that I have recently addressed. In 2012/3 I curated an exhibition of expanded cinema Film in Space at the invitation of Camden Arts Centre, London. My recent exhibition Light Cycles at Christine Park Gallery London extends ideas and thoughts arising from that earlier exhibition, in particular how ambient light (in a gallery for example) has a detrimental affect on the density of the projected image. However, by using tones of grey or even black applied to the projection surface the quality of the image can be enhanced or transformed. At CPG for example my film Eye #2, projected onto black, enables one to approach the image, one that is surprisingly ‘passive’, and to look into it as one might a painting, to observe textures of the wall surface as part of the experience. Furthermore the image appears to sit in a space behind, or on, the wall in a way that is hard to describe - but unique to this form of projection. My film Breathing #2 takes this a step further. By projecting onto a surface divided into black and light grey the density of interior and exterior light can be greatly amplified as well as carefully controlled. A five minute documentary film describing the exhibition can be accessed here: https://vimeo.com/157168317: password ‘flood’ A review of the exhibition is at: https://cawkwell200.com/tag/christine-park-gallery/
