KGaA, Weinheim Macrocyclic furanobutenolide-based cembranoids are precursors to a wide variety of complex ring-fused diterpene structures in corals, implicating a wide variety of oxidation and photochemical processes, cyclisation and transannulation reactions, and skeletal rearrangements from a variety of reactive intermediates and pericyclic processes. This article gives an up to date personal perspective on the speculations that underpin these interesting biosynthetic interrelationships and summarises biomimetic synthesis and interconversions that would seem to vindicate some of these speculations.
